Our peatlands support a range of specialised plants and animals adapted to their environment. Our new set of Bogtastic trump cards will help you learn about some of those species through playing few rounds of cards!

Round-leaved sundew

The cards are packed with information and fantastic facts about each species to help you get to know them. As with any selection of plants and animals in a certain habitat, these species are all inter-connected.

Use the cards to think about how they might be connected and create a moorland food web. You can print out your own copy from the website and sets of cards will also be available from the Bogtastic Van when we visit events.

Download and print the cards at home

The cards are designed to  be printed with a 'Bogtastic' backing. The cards will print front-to-back if you have a double-sided printer, otherwise you can stick the two sides together. You may like to print onto card to give a more robust finish to the set of cards.

How to Play Bogtastic trumps

The aim of the game is to win the whole deck of cards from your opponents. With these cards you’ll be able to learn about some of the fantastic species you might see when visiting upland moorland and boggy habitats.

There are 16 Bogtastic Trump Cards so this game works best with 2 to 3 players but can be played with more (you won’t get many cards each though!).

  1. Separate out the 16 Trumps cards from the rest of the deck
  2. Shuffle them up and share them out between players, face down so no one can see other player’s cards (if the cards won’t divide equally between the players leave the left over cards out of the game to allow an equal number each)
  3. The player left of the dealer takes the first turn, on their topmost card, they choose the “stat” which they think has the best chance of beating the other players and read it out.
  4. Then, in turn the other players also read out their numbers for that same “stat”
  5. The player with the highest number wins, losing cards are placed in the centre for the winner of that round to collect and place at the back of their stack
  6. The winning player from that round can now choose a “stat” from their top card and then go through step 4 and 5 again
  7. Continue playing these rounds until someone has all the cards.

What if there’s a tie?

If 2 or 3 player have a tie on one “stat” during a round all cards from that round are placed in the middle. The player who won the last round then chooses a new “stat” for the next round. Whoever wins this round also collects the cards in the centre when they collect the losing cards.

Make your own trump cards

Different types of habitats link together to form an important network for wildlife. Choose another habitat to study such as woodland.

Create your own Trump cards by researching the species that you might find there.
Try to include all the groups below:
Plants, Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Insects, Birds, Molluscs, Arachnids

Make a food web

  1. Before looking at the info cards can you make some predictions about which species eat what?
  2. Lay out your species (if you have a larger piece of paper/ card use this to lay them out on) with the plants at the bottom and the species with the highest predator/prey scores at the top.
If you don't have card/paper to draw on you could use string for step 3.
  3. Now have a go at drawing lines between them to show which species is being eaten by which.
  4. You can experiment by taking a species out - how would this disappearance affect other species in the web?

Bogtastic pairs

  1. Shuffle the cards
  2. Lay the cards out face down - don't look at what they are
  3. Turn the cards over two at a time. When you turn over two cards which have teh same species on them, take them out of play.
  4. Take turns with the other player. The first to win all the pairs is the winner

You could also play Bogtastic snap!

We hope you enjoy playing! You can find the cards in our 'What to see' section of the website.
