The Moorland Discovery Centre

Cut out view of the Moorland Discovery Centre The Moorland Discovery Centre is a lifelong learning centre, aimed at encouraging groups of all ages to experience and enjoy our wonderful moorland in the Peak District.

 

The centre is set in the grounds of the National Trust's Longshaw Estate and is surrounded by some of the most spectacular areas of the Peak District National Park, but still just over 7 miles from Sheffield city centre. The estate has easy access to moorland, woodland, farmland, rivers and ponds. All set with stunning views across the National Park. The centre is run in partnership between the National Trust and the Peak District National Park Authority on behalf of the Moors for the Future Partnership.

The Award Winning Moorland Discovery Centre

The Moorland Discovery Centre opened in Spring 2007 and was designed by Allen Todd architects with a view to creating a unique learning space and environmentally sustainable building. The building has won a number of architectural design awards including:

  • The Wood Awards 2007 - second place in the community and public access section of the award
  • The Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice 2007
  • The East Midlands award for architecture 2007

A 20 minute podcast (7.5mb) including interviews with people involved in the construction of the centre was produced as part of Architecture Week.
