Moors for the Future Partnership and the
Universities of Durham, Leeds and Manchester are currently working
to compile a compendium of peat restoration and management projects
as part of Defra’s Peat Project, a key element of their Soils
Strategy. The aim of the compendium is to provide a much needed
overview of peatland restoration and management activities across
the UK. It is anticipated the compendium will lead to the formation
of a UK peatland restoration and management forum. More information
can be found on defra’s
website
To be included in this compendium, please
complete the project
information form. It is important that you complete as much
information as possible to enable us all to learn from the experience
and expertise developed across UK peat projects. To help you here
is an example of a completed
form.
We’re using the term ‘projects’
as a catch all description for all practical restoration and / or
management works that you might be involved with and therefore your
‘project’ might not actually be a discrete project as,
for example, you might be implementing peatland restoration / management
as part of delivering a wider management plan. We still very much
want to collect information on this work and ask that you complete
the above form.
Most of the information we request should
be available ‘off the top of your head’; some require
you to rapidly assess your project on a number of factors as a simple
percentage values, with just a small number of questions that require
either costs or area values – but we anticipate that these
should be readily available data. Please be as accurate as possible,
but don’t get bogged down with any one question - it’s
better you complete as much as possible. Any questions (however
big or small) please call Moors for the Future on 01629 816 578
referencing the Peat Compendium Project or email compendium@peakdistrict.gov.uk.
Please also email:
• a one paragraph summary of your project
• site boundary data in GIS format
• copies of any reports, publications or articles you have
produced
A peatland
restoration and management conference was held 13/14 March 2008
at Losehill Hall - Peak District National Park Centre for Environmental
Learning, Castleton.
Please contact
us if you would like any further information on the peat compendium
project.
