What's New at the Moorland Discovery Centre

A guide to what's new at the Moorland Discovery Centre drawing activities

Schools Art Partnership Project

Secondary school pupils from Abbeydale Grange and Bents Green Schools in Sheffield have been taking part in a School Arts Partnership project, with the Moorland Discovery Team, at the National Trust’s Longshaw Estate. The project has involved school pupils working with a local artist to create a unique, giant spiral mobile which was unveiled at a celebration event on 8 April.

The students, who were aged 15, took part in the project to discover the moorlands through art. The students took part in moorland walks, drawing activities and developed a metalwork mobile about moorland wildlife on and around the Longshaw Estate. They worked alongside Sheffield based artist Theo Wickenden who led the workshops with the Learning Officers who are based at Longshaw’s newly built, award-winning Moorland Discovery Centre.

The School Arts Partnership has been run for over four years by the National Trust and this year it was sponsored by Sky. The project aims to link, through learning, schools from contrasting backgrounds to a local National Trust property. School pupils are introduced to new ways of learning with specialist arts-based projects aimed at investigating the heritage of the area.

Up and Coming

Wards Croft – Developing the Ground of the Moorland Discovery Centre

During the autumn we are hoping to further develop the Moorland Discovery Centre by landscaping the grounds around the building. We have been working with the Ramblers Association who have awarded the Moorland Discovery Centre £26k through a legacy. The grounds are to be named Wards Croft after JP Ward a local Sheffield rambling enthusiast who left the legacy to the Ramblers Association.

We are planning on developing the grounds to allow better easy access to the site as well as show casing some of the wonderful moorland plant and moorland habitats. This landscaping will also give us some new out door teaching areas. Once the work is finished during the winter 08 the Moorland Discovery Centre will finally be completed and sit as it was intended in its own moorland surroundings.

Textiles Project

Have you thought about trying you hand at textile art but not know how to get started?

Well in the autumn at the Moorland Discovery Centre we will be hosting a short course run by a local women’s group Art Through Textiles. This six week course will look at a different technique each week to give you a taster of different skills. The project will culminate in producing a joint work which will form part of a display at the Moorland Discovery Centre.

The textile work will take it’s inspiration from Longshaw and the surrounding moorland environment. As well as running this wonderful introductory course Art Through Textiles will also be using the same theme for its members to produce a professional exhibit of textile work. The exhibit will be displayed in the local area and in Sheffield in the New Year.

If you are interested in more information about this course then please contact the team at the Moorland Discovery Centre.
