The
Moorland Discovery Centre is a sustainably built lifelong learning
centre, aimed at encouraging groups of all ages to experience our
wonderful moorland in the Peak District.
Getting
there
The centre is set in the grounds of the National Trust's Longshaw
Estate surrounded by some of the most spectacular areas of the Peak
District National Park, but still just over 7 miles from Sheffield.
The estate is made up of large
areas of moorland, woodland and farmland. There is also easy access
to ponds and rivers with wonderful views and walks. From the estate
it is a short walk out on to the Burbage valley and Sheffield Moors
all of which have excellent learning opportunities.
The Centre is specifically targeted at audiences
from disadvantaged areas of Sheffield and local communities. It
can be booked by groups who wish to run their own meetings or courses.

Toilets and disabled toilet within the Centre, fully equipped classroom
space, small kitchen facility, outside play field and picnic spot,
covered outdoor area, disabled access and education office on site.
The Centre was designed by Allen Todd architects with a view to
creating a unique environmentally sustainable building and was opened

The new building, as well as having excellent environmental credentials
has been nominated for a number of architectural design awards:
- The Wood Awards 2007 - the Moorland Discovery
Centre was highly commended achieiving second place in the community
and public access section of the award
- The Centre has also been shortlisted for
the Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice 2007 and
for the East Midlands award for architecture 2007
