Science Meet The Eye!

Science meets the eye! is an art exhibition celebrating the role of upland research in the Peak District. It brings scientific data to life through images, illustrations and computer graphics based on research projects in the moorlands.

The project is about making links between science and people. Data can be a dry business. But visualising results with exciting graphics, stunning photos or slightly esoteric imagery can really inspire people to find out more. The art work illustrates the range of important research that is being undertaken in the uplands concerning climate change, flooding and many other areas that impact all of us in our everyday lives.

Seventeen entries have been submitted to the exhibition and they are on display at Peak District National Park visitor centres and other public spaces throughout 2007. Delegates at Moors for the Future’s fifth annual research conference “Climate Change and Upland Management” helped select the one winner and four commended entries.

The five commended entries below have been produced as postcards and an exhibition guide is also available. We hope the stunning images will really make you take a fresh look at the array of top scientific research that is taking place.

We do hope you enjoy a sample of the entries shown below and hope it prompts you to visit the exhibition. You may also like to hear our four Science meets the Ears! podcasts.

Two entries to the exhibition looked at how to alleviate wildfires on the Peak District moors. Meet the people behind the work and see the devastation fires can cause.

Four podcasts that provide further information (including interviews with researchers behind the work) from a number of the Science Meets the Eye entries can be downloaded here. There were funded by the Economic and Social Research Council as part of:
