Textiles Project

Have you thought about trying you hand at textile art but not know how to get started?

Well in the autumn at the Moorland Discovery Centre we will be hosting a short course run by a local women’s group Art Through Textiles. This six week course will look at a different technique each week to give you a taster of different skills. The project will culminate in producing a joint work which will form part of a display at the Moorland Discovery Centre.

The textile work will take it’s inspiration from Longshaw and the surrounding moorland environment. As well as running this wonderful introductory course Art Through Textiles will also be using the same theme for its members to produce a professional exhibit of textile work. The exhibit will be displayed in the local area and in Sheffield in the New Year.

If you are interested in more information about this course then please contact the team at the Moorland Discovery Centre.

Science Meets the Eye

A touring art exhibition aims to bring alive for residents and visitors the importance of high profile scientific research taking place in the uplands of the Peak District National Park.

The ‘Science Meets the Eye!' exhibition will showcase entries from the competition which took place as part of the Moors for the Future 2007 research conference to promote science to a wider audience.

The exhibition will go to several Peak District National Park visitor centres and other venues during 2008. Postcards that accompany the exhibition will be on sale at the centres.

During 2005 over eighty moorland themed events culminated in a Moorland Festival (10-25 September) to celebrate this beautiful and important habitat. Below are some pictures from the Family Fun Days held as part of the festival.

Competition

During 2005 we ran an art competition for amateur artists to produce moorland inspired artwork. The overall winner was Tom Jolley (aged 13) from Bamford, Derwent Valley. His entry was a photograph entitled "Gathering Sheep for Shearing" (below left). Both Tom and two other winners; Heather Clare (snow on the moors, below right) and Jacqueline Fantom (poem entitled
The First Curlew of Spring) won a pair of tickets each on our last event of the year - `the moorland experience` - a helicopter flight with Pennine Helicopters to a restoration site where they were met by Chris Dean, Project Manager, who gave them a tour of the work undertaken by the Moors for the Future partnership.
