The
Moorland Centre is a new visitor and learning centre at Fieldhead,
Edale, replacing the former National Park Information Centre. The
Duke of Devonshire, speaking at the opening ceremony in September
2006, said: "In order to love these uplands properly we need
to learn about them and educational facilities and functions are
high on the list of priorities here and rightly so".

- interprets the special qualities of the
Peak District moorlands in order to increase the public's understanding
and enjoyment of this fragile national resource
- has an interactive exhibition
which gives visitors an insight into the moorland landscape
- aims to attract repeat visitors, through
changing displays and a programme of events
- caters for a range of ages and interests
- provides 'access for all' to the building
and grounds
- provides a rest and shelter area for
groups
- provides an information service, including
weather forecast and wildlife sightings
- has a retail area with a good range of
maps, books, clothing and gifts
- is insulated with a green
roof and heated by a ground
source heat pump
The new building is linked through
a covered walkway to a refurbished farmhouse. This is the base for
the Moors for the Future team and our research
centre. We are currently developing a specialist moorlands reference
library for students and the general public.
The popular Fieldhead
camp site surrounding the centre is open throughout the year
and was recently listed in the top 50 camp sites in Britain by the
Guardian newspaper.
The Centre is at Fieldhead, Edale, approximately
400 metres from the railway station and village car park, on the
main road to the village centre and Grindsbrook (location
map). N.b. There is no visitor parking at the Centre - please
come by public transport or use the village car parks. The limited
parking at the Centre is for camp site or disabled users only. The
