Hare survey

Hare survey

We would like you to send us your sightings of the hares and rabbits you see while out and about. By doing this you can help us to find out if:

  • mountain hare coat colour is becoming mismatched to its environment
  • distribution of these species is changing over time – is the mountain hare declining at the southern end of its range?
  • brown hares are out-competing mountain hares

The species we would like your sightings of are shown on the right.

How to take part

1. If you see any of the species, make a note of how many you saw, when and where. Try to give as much information as possible about where it was so we can get an accurate location. Optionally you can download and print a postcard (by clicking the image below) to remind you what to look for when you're out and about. You can also use our Explore Moor smartphone/tablet app (for Apple and Android) to help to identify species in the field.
