Award winning design

The Moorland Discovery Centre opened in Spring 2007 and was designed by Allen Todd architects with a view to creating a unique environmentally sustainable building.

Sustainability features include:
  • Extensive use of timber sourced from responsibly managed forests.
  • Heating using a ground source heat pump taking heat from the ground outside.
  • Thick ‘Thermafleece’ sheep’s wool insulation in the walls and roof.
  • Large south-facing windows reducing the need for electricity.
  • Water comes from a nearby underground spring.
  • Low flush toilets, sprinkler taps and an automatic leak detector to conserve water.
The building has won a number of architectural design awards including:
  • The Wood Awards 2007 - second place in the community and public access section of the award
  • The Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice 2007
  • The East Midlands award for architecture 2007

A 20 minute podcast (7.5mb) including interviews with people involved in the construction of the centre was produced as part of Architecture Week.
