The Moorland Discovery Centre opened in Spring 2007 and was designed by Allen Todd architects with a view to creating a unique environmentally sustainable building.
Sustainability features include:- Extensive use of timber sourced from responsibly managed forests.
- Heating using a ground source heat pump taking heat from the ground outside.
- Thick ‘Thermafleece’ sheep’s wool insulation in the walls and roof.
- Large south-facing windows reducing the need for electricity.
- Water comes from a nearby underground spring.
- Low flush toilets, sprinkler taps and an automatic leak detector to conserve water.
- The Wood Awards 2007 - second place in the community and public access section of the award
- The Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice 2007
- The East Midlands award for architecture 2007
A 20 minute podcast (7.5mb) including interviews with people involved in the construction of the centre was produced as part of Architecture Week.
